Makalu Region
Overview
Other Regions
Makalu Region trekking lies in the eastern part of Nepal and borders Tibet. The region is one of the most remote and least explored trekking destinations in the Himalayas. After a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar followed by a drive to Num, trekkers enter the spectacular Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area. Established in 1992, this protected area is famous for its exceptional biodiversity and dramatic mountain landscapes. Most of the people living in the region belong to Rai, Sherpa, and Tibetan Buddhist communities, and their culture, traditions, and lifestyle reflect strong Himalayan influence.
In the Makalu Region there are several trekking routes. They include: Makalu Base Camp Trek, Arun Valley Trek, Makalu and Everest Trek, and Barun Valley Trek. The Makalu Base Camp Trek is the main trekking trail of the region and is known for its wilderness, isolated villages, and pristine natural beauty. The trek leads trekkers to the base of Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world at 8,485m. The region offers spectacular views of Everest, Lhotse, Chamlang, and Kanchenjunga along the trekking routes. The highest elevation reached during the trek is around 5,000m at Makalu Base Camp.
While trekking in this region you will see dense rhododendron forests, bamboo groves, alpine meadows, deep river valleys, and massive glaciers. Makalu Barun National Park is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including more than 400 species of birds and many rare wildlife species. Animals found in the region include the snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, and Himalayan thar. The park is also an important habitat for protected birds such as the Himalayan Monal, blood pheasant, and satyr tragopan. The remote Barun Valley, with its untouched wilderness and dramatic mountain scenery, is one of the major highlights of trekking in the Makalu Region.
