Mustang Region trekking lies in the northwestern part of Nepal and borders Tibet. The region is famous for its unique desert-like landscapes, ancient Tibetan culture, and centuries-old monasteries. After a flight or drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara and then to Jomsom, trekkers enter the mysterious Himalayan kingdom of Mustang. The area was once an independent kingdom and still preserves strong Tibetan Buddhist traditions, language, and lifestyle. Most of the people living in the region are of Thakali and Tibetan origin, and their culture and architecture closely resemble those found in Tibet.

In the Mustang Region there are several trekking routes. They include: Upper Mustang Trek, Lower Mustang Trek, Jomsom Muktinath Trek, Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, and Damodar Kunda Trek. The Upper Mustang Trek is the most popular trekking trail of the region and is well known for its ancient caves, monasteries, and dramatic mountain scenery. The trail leads trekkers to the historic walled city of Lo Manthang, the cultural heart of Upper Mustang. The highest elevation of this trekking area is around 4,200m at Lo Manthang and nearby high passes.

While trekking in this region you will see spectacular views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Tibetan Himalayan ranges. The trail passes through deep canyons, colorful cliffs, barren hills, wind-carved rock formations, and traditional Tibetan villages. The Kali Gandaki Gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world, is another major highlight of the trek. Despite its dry landscape, the region supports unique vegetation and wildlife including blue sheep, Himalayan fox, snow leopard, and Himalayan griffon vultures. Mustang is also famous for its ancient Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags, chortens, and the colorful Tiji Festival celebrated every year in Lo Manthang.
